Different Directions Experimental Film Festival 2009
This year’s Theme: Experimental Film and Literature.
'Is it still possible to propose an encounter between experimental film and literature? Is literature anything more than archival material to be worked and reworked by new media? Or rather, does literature shelter a form of thinking that allows experimental cinema to constantly reinvent itself. In an age of what Jonathan Rosenbaum calls ‘narrative correctness’, of oppressive presuppositions about good and bad ways of telling stories visually, doesn’t experimental filmmaking’s bond with literary history maintain multiple strategies: translating the perceptions and emotions of great writing into the complex play of light and shifting perspectives, and allowing language graphic and material freedom from discursive and narrative strictures? Experimental cinema is commonly defined as being about the filmmaking process itself. Therefore it looks to literature less for plot, story or structure than for rhythm, affective inspiration or for source material to take apart and deconstruct. At its most playful a Ruiz camera movement (for example) can equate to a sentence by Proust . Often disconnected lines are plucked from books and laid over imagery, not arbitrarily but to create new conjunctions and disjunctions of word and image, voice and place, setting different forms of movement against one another. Different Directions ‘09 will explore the subversion and rejection of narrativity, alongside other filmic conventions, in the work of a selection of international artists and experimental filmmakers who have found inspiration in great works of literature.'
